But as you emerge from the acute phase of alcohol withdrawal, a new and frantic hunger arrives to take its place. Suddenly, you are not craving a gin and tonic. You are raiding the kitchen at ten o’clock at night for a packet of biscuits, a litre of ice cream, or a bag of Haribo.

For many people in early recovery, this shift brings a wave of intense and often secret shame. It feels like a lateral move, swapping one poison for another. You tell yourself you have an addictive personality, that you lack the basic willpower to be healthy, or that you are fundamentally broken.

Let us take that shame off the table right now. This is not a moral failing. It is not a lack of character. Sugar cravings in early sobriety are not a weakness. They are a collision between standard-issue human biology and sophisticated industrial design. Your brain is not sitting quietly and waiting to heal. It is hunting for a neuro-chemical substitute to stabilise a system that is running Under Load.

In early sobriety, your reward system is a neurobiological stress test. It is primed for high-intensity stimulation. The food industry has spent decades, and billions of pounds, making sure that when your brain goes hunting for a replacement hit, their products are the most accessible and the hardest to resist on the shelf. They have engineered a metabolic trap that plugs straight into your neurobiology.

We will explore how your internal circuitry has been hijacked, why some of the advice you hear in recovery circles makes things worse, and how you can pick up the wrench and dismantle this machinery for good. Did I Relapse, or Did My Brain Just Swap Alcohol for Sugar?

You did not relapse. Your brain got swapped. It is a common misconception that sugar cravings in recovery are purely psychological, a bit of comfort for the soul. In reality, there is a well-documented pattern known as the sweet-liking phenotype. The same neurological wiring that pulls a person toward alcohol also pulls them toward high-intensity sweetness. In one inpatient study of people going through serious alcohol withdrawal, nearly 40 per cent showed a significant, measurable rise in sugar intake and sweet cravings.

Your reward system does not simply power down when you remove alcohol. The striatum, the amygdala and the taste cortex all lit up with every drink. Now they sit in a state of high-arousal deficit. Brain imaging confirms that sugar lights up those exact same regions. From a chemical point of view, your brain treats sugar as a substitute hit. It is a patch over the wound, and one that rarely heals anything.

To handle the volatility of blood sugar and craving, it helps to give the biochemistry a face. So meet Glucipher, your internal feral raccoon. Glucipher is my name for your blood sugar and craving biochemistry, a scruffy, clever, bin-raiding animal who lives inside your metabolic system.

When you feed him properly, with nutrient-dense, steady fuel, Glucipher is calm. He curls up in a corner and leaves you alone. But the moment you remove alcohol, throw your blood sugar around with caffeine, skip meals or run on chronic stress, Glucipher goes feral. He tears the lid off the bin and screams for the fastest fuel on earth.

Here is the cruel maths of industrial sugar. It only feeds the raccoon for about twenty minutes. When you eat ultra-processed sugar, your blood sugar spikes far above normal. Your body senses a metabolic emergency and floods the system with insulin to bring it down. That causes a rapid, brutal crash. The result? The raccoon wakes up twenty minutes later hungrier, angrier and louder than before. You have not calmed the craving. You have trained the raccoon to scream harder for the next fix. Why Do I Crave Sugar When I Am Hungry? The Ghrelin Hijack

The urge to reach for sugar is often driven by a hormonal hijack involving ghrelin. We tend to file ghrelin away as the simple hunger hormone, but its role runs far deeper than that. Ghrelin is a primary driver of the brain’s addictive reward pathways.

In human laboratory studies, researchers gave ghrelin to alcohol-dependent participants and saw their cravings for alcohol climb, directly and significantly. That is the vital piece of the puzzle. Hunger and addictive craving share the exact same neurological wiring.

So if you walk into a moment of craving on an empty stomach, the battle is already half lost. Your physiology is demanding a hit to stabilise energy. Because the wiring is shared, your brain translates that hunger into a desperate need for a substance, whether that is alcohol or sugar. By the time you feel the hunger, your prefrontal cortex is already being bypassed. The food industry knows this, which is why it positions hyper-palatable snacks as convenient hunger fixes. A hungry brain is a brain that cannot say no.

Coach’s Reflection: We keep trying to fight cravings with mindfulness or meditation. But you cannot meditate your way out of a ghrelin spike. If you are hungry, your biology will win in the end. The wrench here is simple. Never let yourself reach that state of biological emergency. If the stomach is empty, the Gate of choice is already closed.

Is It a Good Idea to Eat Sugar to Stop Alcohol Cravings?

No, and the evidence is clear on this. In a lot of traditional recovery circles, “just eat something sweet” gets handed out as harmless, even kind, advice for managing an alcohol urge. The clinical evidence suggests it is a myth, and one that can quietly undermine long-term sobriety.

A 2025 randomised crossover trial looked at how people with alcohol use disorder respond to glucose, and it showed that the sweet fix is a biological gamble. The response split three ways, depending on each person’s insulin-responder type.

  • Normal insulin responders got a slight, temporary calming of the craving.
  • Slow insulin responders got no useful effect on the craving at all.
  • Fast insulin responders found the sugar made the craving worse, like petrol on a fire.

You cannot know which responder type you are without laboratory testing. So reaching for sweets is a coin toss with your recovery riding on it. On top of that, tracking data shows that eating sweets earlier in the day often predicts stronger alcohol cravings that same evening. For a lot of people, the sugar patch does not heal the wound. It keeps the reward system agitated until it demands a stronger sedative, which is alcohol.

We have to stop treating sugar as a harmless substitute. If you are a fast responder, that chocolate bar at three in the afternoon is the reason you are white-knuckling it at six.

Why Is Processed Food So Addictive? The Tobacco Playbook in Your Trolley

These foods are hard to resist for a reason, and the reason is not an accident. It is the result of a deliberate transfer of addictive technology from the tobacco industry to the food industry. This is not a conspiracy theory. It is documented corporate history.

Between 1985 and 2000, the tobacco giant Philip Morris bought up major food companies, including General Foods, Kraft and Nabisco. The published analysis of internal industry records shows these companies applied the same sensory science once used to make cigarettes compelling, building hyper-palatable products designed to slip past your natural sense of fullness.

The numbers from that era are stark. Researchers compared foods owned by tobacco companies against the rest.

  • Tobacco-owned foods were 29 per cent more likely to hit the fat-and-salt hyper-palatability mark.
  • They were 80 per cent more likely to hit the carbohydrate-and-salt hyperpalatability mark.

They even borrowed the risk-softening trick from low-tar cigarette branding, slapping low-fat or natural labels on the front to distract mothers and children from the aggressively engineered formula underneath. The same expertise that hooked a generation on nicotine was turned loose to make sure you could not stop at one biscuit. Today, addictive-style eating affects around 14 per cent of adults and roughly 12 to 15 per cent of young people across the globe.

Coach’s Reflection: Next time you feel weak in the biscuit aisle, remember who you are really up against. You are not fighting your own lack of character. You are fighting the pooled research of the world’s most successful tobacco scientists. Anger is a useful tool here. Use it. Recognise that you are being mined for profit, and let that stiffen your spine.

How Does Food Texture Make You Overeat? The Softness Delivery System

Beyond the chemistry, the industry uses texture as a mechanical bypass of your fullness signals. Call it the softness delivery system, and it works by exploiting what I call the nature gap. In the wild, high fat and high sugar almost never turn up together in a soft, fibre-free package.

Ultra-processed foods are built to be soft, smooth and quick to eat. That is a deliberate choice, and it comes down to consumption speed. Research comparing hard, chewy textures against soft ones found two things worth knowing.

  • Soft textures push the eating rate up by around 85 per cent.
  • Harder textures, the ones that make you chew, cut daily energy intake by roughly a third.

Soft food is fast fuel. It slides down before leptin, your fullness signal, can register the calories. By the time your body tries to tell you it has had enough, the packet is already empty. That mouthfeel is not a culinary nicety. It is a mechanical delivery system designed to disable your braking system.

Coach’s Reflection: The industry wants you to drink your calories through your teeth. The nature gap is their playground. Real food does the opposite. A steak, a carrot, and an apple all make you work. If you find yourself eating something that barely needs chewing, your sense of enough is being switched off by design.

How Do Food Labels Hide Sugar? Concealment Through Fragmentation

The industry adds one more layer of difficulty through deceptive labelling. I call it concealment through fragmentation. To avoid listing sugar as the first ingredient, which would trigger the by-weight ordering rule on the label, manufacturers split the total sugar load across several different sweeteners.

A little cane syrup here, a dash of fruit juice concentrate there, a measure of maltodextrin, and each individual sweetener drops further down the list. Add them back together, and they are often the main ingredient by weight. There is no official list of 250 names, whatever you may have read, but there are hundreds of legal aliases in use, all of them softening your sense of risk.

Evaporated cane juice is the classic example. Regulators have flagged it as deceptive because it is simply sugar dressed up to sound fresh and wholesome. The added sugars line only appeared on labels because manufacturers got so good at gaming the old system. So when you read a label, count the number of separate sweeteners rather than trusting the first ingredient.

Coach’s Reflection: The front of the packet is marketing. The back of the packet is the blueprint of the trap. If you see three or four different names for sugar, that product is not food. It is a delivery system for a glucose spike. Do not be charmed by an artisanal name like cane syrup. Your liver does not read the branding.

What Is the Voice That Justifies a Craving? Meet Bob, Your Internal Press Officer

Between the physical craving and the act of eating, there is a voice that justifies the whole thing. In EOM, I call that voice Bob.

Bob is your internal PR firm, the narrative layer that sits on top of the biology. He does not create the craving. That job belongs to your physiology. What Bob does is spin the chemical urge into a wise, deserved choice, smoothing over the gap between what you want to do and what you know. His press releases sound like this.

  • You quit drinking, so you have earned this reward.
  • It is only chocolate, not alcohol. Look how far you have come.
  • One will not hurt, and look how stressed you are today.

The mistake most people make is arguing with Bob or feeling guilty for hearing him at all. Bob is a spin doctor. He will always have a line ready. Your job is not to fire him. Your job is to catch him in the act. See the pitch for what it is: a clever bit of narrative laid over a biological hijack. Coach’s Reflection: Bob is silver-tongued, but he is predictable. He runs the same three scripts every time. You deserve it. It is better than booze. Just this once. When you hear those words, do not argue. Just say, there goes Bob with another press release, and keep moving.

How Do You Stop a Craving in the Moment? The Craving Loop and the Gate

In the Emotional Observation Method, a craving runs through an eight-step loop, and it happens at lightning speed. I call it the Craving Loop.

  1. Physiology. Your internal state, say low blood sugar, sets the tone.
  2. Tone. A scratchy, low-energy tone makes impulsive behaviour far more likely.
  3. Observation. You notice, or fail to notice, the physical signal.
  4. Attachment Timing. The millisecond window where the craving hooks you.
  5. Evaluation. Bob’s spin and your own justification.
  6. Behaviour. The act of eating.
  7. Identity. Repeated behaviour hardens into “I am a sugar addict”.
  8. Feedback. That identity loops back and reinforces the starting physiology.

Freedom lives in the Gate, the small gap between the physical signal and the behaviour. The hijack itself fires in roughly 100 milliseconds, faster than conscious thought, which is why I call it the 100ms Hijack. But if you can hold the Gate open for even ten seconds, by drinking water, walking into another room, or simply naming the sensation out loud, you give your prefrontal cortex time to catch up. Freedom is in the pause, not in gritted teeth.

Coach’s Reflection: Most people try to change their Identity first. I want to be a healthy person. But the loop does not start there. It starts with Physiology. If you do not fix the blood sugar, the new identity never sticks. So focus on the Gate. Survive the first ten seconds of a hijack, and you have already won the biggest part of the fight.

How Do You Stop Sugar Cravings in Recovery? Practical Tools

To break the trap, you move from observing to acting with a bit of clinical precision. Here are the tools. Use them to redesign your environment and take back control.

Feed the Raccoon Before He Wakes

The single most powerful move is to head off the Glucipher effect by eating real food, with protein, fat and fibre, before you are starving. A fed raccoon is a calm raccoon. Instead of a biscuit, have Greek yoghurt with walnuts, or apple slices with almond butter. The protein and fibre act as brakes. They slow the fuel delivery and head off the insulin crash.

Use the Ten-Minute Rule

Never meet a craving on an empty stomach. When a sugar craving hits, eat a small amount of real food first, a piece of cheese or a handful of almonds, and then wait ten minutes. That is your manual friction gate. More often than not, the craving was hunger wearing a disguise. Once real food steadies the physiology, the need for sugar tends to fade on its own.

Run a Daily Tone Check

Every morning, take a reading of your Physiology. Check your sleep quality, your muscle tension, and your baseline hunger. If your Tone is scratchy or flat, you already know your Attachment Timing will be off today, and your cravings will be louder. So plan your protein-heavy meals ahead and pre-empt the raccoon before he wakes.

Turn the Packet Over

Ignore the low-fat and natural marketing on the front. Turn the packet over and count the aliases for sugar. The moment you spot the fragmentation trick, the design loses its grip on you. You are no longer the target. You are the architect, reading the blueprint of a faulty machine.
